How to Recognize Buckled Roof Shingles

Are your roof’s shingles damaged? Call Eustis Roofing at (352) 343-4240.

You expect your home’s roof to last for many years, but if its shingles are buckling, you might need to replace them or the roof sooner than you think.

Buckled roof shingles indicate that there’s moisture trapped in your roof underlayment or wood deck. A high moisture content can cause mold and moss to grow below your shingles, which leads to major issues and expensive repair bills if you don’t fix it promptly.

Learn how to recognize the signs of roof buckling in this guide from Eustis Roofing. We’re pros at inspecting shingle roofs and have served The Villages and Tavares areas for more than 60 years.

What Do Buckled Roof Shingles Look Like?

Shingles in good condition should look flat and smooth. If your shingles appear rippled, wavy, or pushed up as if something is inside of them, your roof is likely buckling. Contact our professional roofers at Eustis Roofing so we can assess the damage as soon as possible.

Why Do Roof Shingles Buckle?

Roofs commonly buckle due to a lack of ventilation. Without enough ventilation, the roof traps moisture, which causes the felt or tar paper to absorb water and wrinkle.

Buckling can also happen if you recently replaced your roof and chose to keep the same decking system. Removing the roof exposes the deck to moisture, which means the deck can shift and develop buckling over time.

Sometimes, buckling occurs because your roof is too old to stop moisture from getting in. Over the years, your roof takes a beating from Florida’s rain, humidity, and wind. If your roof is more than 30 years old, it may be due for a replacement soon.

Improper installation is a major cause of buckled shingles. Some contractors use the wrong materials or don’t take the time to construct your roof according to Florida Building Code. Others may install a new roof on top of your existing roof system or fail to install spacers between the wood. If you suspect that a contractor didn’t install your roof properly, give Eustis Roofing a call to see how we can help.

How Can You Fix Buckled Shingles?

To repair buckling, roofers remove the warped shingles, cut out the wrinkled tar paper, and replace it so that it lays flat. Buckling likely won’t come back once the roof system dries and remains moisture-free.

In the future, it’s also smart to make sure that your attic has proper ventilation. You’ll need at least one square foot of vent area per 150 square feet of attic floor space.
