Metal vs. Slate vs. Shingle Roofs

Though shingles are the most common roof material you see on Florida homes, it isn’t the only one. There are quite a few roofing materials out there, each with its advantages and disadvantages. This blog will be discussing the pros and cons of the three most common roofs in Florida: metal roofs, architectural shingle roofs, and slate roofs.

Metal Roof

Pros

Metal roofs are extremely durable, with some, like DECRA’s Villa Tile metal roofs, offering a lifespan of up to 70 years and a variety of aesthetic options to fit different home styles. While all other traditional roofs last an average of 12 to 20 years, a metal roof, with proper maintenance, can last a whopping 70 years. A big part of its long-term durability is metal’s ability to withstand inclement weather. In a State bombarded by hurricanes yearly, the weather strong properties of a metal roof make it a worthwhile investment.

Cons

Metal roofs have a high cost, costing up to $900 per 100 square feet. The extremely long life of a metal roof makes this cost worthwhile for those who can stomach it, but it is an investment. Metal roofs are also very industrial looking, and though it can fit some aesthetics, it isn’t the most appealing looking roof.

Architectural Shingle Roofs

Pro

Architectural shingle roofs are the most common roofing material used. The key to architectural shingles’ popularity is their balance of affordability and reliability. Asphalt shingles are inexpensive and reliable. When it comes to maintenance, asphalt shingles are easily replaceable.

Con

Architectural shingle roofs have the shortest lifespans of the roof materials on this list—though the lifespan is also dependent on the type of shingle. 3-tab shingles last an average of 12 years, while architectural shingles can reach 20 years.

Slate Roof

Pro

Slate roofs are very pleasant, resembling a more elegant shingle roof. Made of a metamorphic stone, Slate roofs come in a large variety of sizes and colors. They also last as long as a metal roof, with the best lasting up to 100 years! Since they are stone slates, they are extremely durable to weather and require far less maintenance.

Con

Slate roofs are the most expensive roofing material on this list, clocking in at up to $20 per square foot. Slate roofs are also very heavy, which makes weight consideration a factor in installation.

Every roofing material has its pros and cons. You must consider your budget, your visual preference, and long-term concerns. It’s best to discuss and decide with an expert roofing company such as Eustis Roofing!
